The Lahore High Court (LHC) has proposed a strict measure to close all markets across Punjab by 8 PM throughout the year. This decision aims to address the growing environmental crisis caused by smog. Justice Shahid Karim issued this order during hearings on petitions demanding stricter measures to combat air pollution.
The judge also remarked that master plans of different cities were being developed, and now housing societies would no longer be built in green areas. The court discussed ongoing initiatives, including the arrest of those involved in burning crop residue.
It also ordered to transfer the deputy commissioners of districts where crop residue is found and to confiscate the vehicles found emitting smoke in Lahore immediately. The advocate general replied that those who burn stubble are being arrested immediately, and no one is being spared, adding that the government was planning to introduce packages for students who offer good ideas for a clean environment.
Directives include:
Market Closure at 8 PM: Aims to reduce energy consumption and vehicle emissions during late hours.
Sunday Closures: Complete market shutdowns on Sundays to further decrease emissions.
Traffic Control: Restrictions on heavy vehicles, which are major contributors to smog, including fines for non-compliance.
Work-from-Home Policies: Encouragement for private offices to adopt remote work for at least two days a week.
Smog Control Actions: Immediate crackdowns on smoke-emitting vehicles, with cooperation between traffic and Dolphin police.
The court also warned of strict action, including sealing non-compliant schools, to ensure adherence to its orders. The hearing was adjourned till Friday, with the court directing all relevant departments to submit detailed progress reports.
These measures are part of a broader strategy to curb pollution, which includes penalties and enhanced monitoring of transportation and industrial emissions. The court emphasized that while these measures are immediate, addressing the smog crisis fully will require sustained efforts over several years.
