Comcast has introduced its new ultra-low latency Internet service for Xfinity customers, aiming to significantly reduce lag for activities requiring fast and responsive connections. This innovative technology, initially rolled out with partners like Valve, NVIDIA, Meta, and Apple, is designed to enhance real-time communication and gaming experiences by minimizing delays in bi-directional traffic.
The key innovation behind Comcast’s low-latency Internet is an open standard called L4S (Low Latency, Low Loss, Scalable Throughput), developed by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). L4S detects congestion issues in real-time and adjusts future data transmission accordingly, reducing overall latency and improving real-time performance. This advancement is particularly beneficial for activities like multiplayer gaming, virtual reality applications, and video conferencing.
The initial rollout of this technology has begun in cities such as Atlanta, Chicago, Colorado Springs, Philadelphia, Rockville (Maryland), and San Francisco, with plans to expand to more locations rapidly. Comcast’s new low-lag Internet aims to provide a smoother, more immersive experience for users who rely on stable and fast Internet connections.
