The federal government has removed Ahmed Ishaque Jehangir from his position as Director General of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) due to serious administrative failures. Jehangir has been reassigned as an Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in the Establishment Division. This decision comes amid growing concerns over human trafficking and the FIA’s slow response to migrant boat tragedies.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was reportedly unhappy with Jehangir’s performance, particularly his inability to enforce strict measures against human trafficking networks. Despite direct instructions from the Prime Minister, Jehangir failed to establish a strong system of accountability and reform within the FIA. Under his leadership, there was a rise in cases involving FIA officials themselves being linked to human trafficking.
The FIA has faced criticism over its handling of several deadly migrant incidents, including the recent capsizing of a boat off the Moroccan coast, which killed at least 50 people, most of them Pakistanis. The slow pace of investigations and the lack of strong control over the agency contributed to the decision to remove Jehangir from office.
The government has also removed Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Inspector General of Police Akhtar Hayat, citing his failure to maintain law and order in the province.
